Riverway Clubhouse (Burnaby)

Clubhouse at Riverway Golf on Urbanspoon

It’s been many years since I started participating in Dine Out Vancouver. And I actually look forward to it as it’s a chance for me to check out places I either want to try for some time or never would have known. With that “unofficial” tradition, I started my research on this year’s menu quite early on. And I think I’ve picked some interesting ones too.

To kick it off, we came to Burnaby Riverway Clubhouse with Greeny’s family. From time to time, we would come to the Riverway Driving Range. Never once did we enter the Clubhouse, so I thought this was the perfect chance to do so.
Our reservation was quite early in the evening so it wasn’t full house just yet. We were taken to a round table nicely set with flower, nearby the window. The interior has a very high ceiling, simple wooden-themed layout, and quite spacious. Through the dark sky, I saw a couple tables in the patio area – I could only imagine it would be a very nice spot in the summer. As we were here for the Dine Out menu, it really didn’t take long to decide.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup
The butternut squash soup came with a strip of candied bacon and crème fraiche. The crème fraiche blended into the squash soup nicely where the candied bacon gave it a little smokiness taste. It was definitely a good way to start the meal.

Watermelon Carpaccio with Crispy Chicken
The crispy chicken was actually tender rather than crispy. I didn’t have it with the watermelon carpaccio but I would assume it would have a refreshing aroma to balance out the sweet and spicy chili glaze.

Root Beer Braised Short Rib Poutine
It was a very good portion poutine, and I like how the short rib mixed with the sweetness from root beer. It was saucy but not too salty even with the beef gravy.

Bacon Wrapped Filet  Mignon
There were two small pieces of bacon wrapped filet mignon, grilled nicely to medium. At first, we thought this came with a thicker fries. It was not until we had a bite that we realized it was the rosemary polenta. I liked how the bacon wasn’t overly salty or smoky – yet the fattiness brought the filet mignon a different depth in taste.

Pan Seared Arctic Char
The Arctic char has a nice crispy skin out the outside, coupled with flavourful meat. The roasted red pepper risotto cake also had a very well balanced taste.

Baked Truffled Mac n’ Cheese
I couldn’t help myself when I saw the mac n’ cheese. It was such a simple item and this one was a bit more luxurious with wild mushroom. The tomato was diced and mixed into the mac n’ cheese. It wasn’t overly salty and I liked how the creaminess was just right. In fact, I was hoping it would be a bit saltier than it was.

Marshmallow Bread Pudding
The marshmallow bread pudding was quite dense. Topped with vanilla ice cream and hazelnut chocolate drizzle, it was quite fulfilling.

White Chocolate Panna Cotta
Topped with berry compote, the white chocolate panna cotta was very smooth. The popping candy on the top reminded me of how I used to love it when I was little. I wonder if we can still find it in the stores nowadays.

I think the food was very well executed for the most part. Both the taste and presentation were there – it was definitely a very tasty meal. The only not so positive thing I have to say would be the service. At the time we were there, it wasn’t very busy just yet. However, we were not greeted at the time we sat down. Our server just came and took our order directly. The wine glasses were also left on the table despite we didn’t order wine at all. After the delicious appetizers, we waited for quite some time for our entrée. In fact, we had waived our hand for nearly 5 minutes to get our server’s attention. We thought there was a mixed up with orders as the large group near-by us got some of their entrées despite ordering later than we did. Perhaps they realized we have been waiting for a while, someone from the restaurant came over with glasses of Champaign and apologized for the wait. I thought it was very nice of them to acknowledge that.

Regardless of the not-on-par service we received, the food was very well pulled off. Based on that, I would recommend people to experience this place. I do hope the service would be more organized. After all, it’s part of the dining experience.
